Jan. 18, 2026 — Redmond, Wash. The Redmond City Council plans to conduct final interviews with top candidates and vote to fill City Council Position #1 during its meeting on January 20, 2026, following a review of 35 anonymized applications at a special meeting on January 13.
The vacancy stems from the resignation of Councilmember Osman Salahuddin, announced on November 4, 2025. Salahuddin had served since 2023, with his term originally running through 2027.
“While Councilmember Salahuddin’s enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions as a member of City Council will be missed, we sincerely thank him for his dedication to Redmond and wish him well in his next chapter. We also look forward to City Council filling this vacancy and ensuring that Council’s service to the community continues uninterrupted.”
Applications closed at noon on January 2, 2026, as detailed in a November 19 official announcement encouraging eligible residents—those living in the 98052 zip code, age 18 or older, and registered U.S. voters—to apply via governmentjobs.com.
A Facebook video documents the January 13 session where councilmembers examined the applications. Final interviews target the top four candidates, with a majority vote potentially leading to swearing-in that evening.
The appointee will serve the remainder of the term through 2027, after which the position will be filled via election. The current roster shows other positions held by members with terms expiring in 2027 or 2029, including Council President Melissa Stuart in Position #4.
A City of Redmond Facebook post on January 1 reminded residents of the impending deadline.
Full process details are available in the Legistar documentation. Updates can be found on the City Council page.
