Redmond Rep. Salahuddin Kicks Off 2026 Legislative Session with Focus on Housing, Affordability

Jan. 19, 2026 — Redmond, Wash. Rep. Osman Salahuddin (D-48th District) welcomed constituents to the 2026 Washington state legislative session in a video message uploaded by Washington House Democrats on Jan. 18, outlining priorities to protect affordability, housing, food security, and health care amid federal changes. He invited input through a QR code survey on district priorities.

Salahuddin’s priorities align with HB 1859, a bill he prime-sponsored to expand affordable housing on properties owned by religious organizations. The measure is scheduled for a House Finance Committee hearing this week, according to the House Democrats’ Hot Sheet for Week 1.

The representative, who serves on the Capital Budget, Civil Rights & Judiciary, and Postsecondary Education & Workforce committees, has emphasized housing, childcare, healthcare, and economic stability on his official page. These focus areas match his session welcome message.

Before the session started, Salahuddin engaged the community through posts on his Facebook page. On Jan. 10, he promoted a survey for resident input on legislative priorities. He announced a coffee and conversation event on Jan. 11 at Qamaria Yemeni Coffee from 10 a.m. to noon, encouraging constituents to share concerns (posts here, here, and here).

Salahuddin also introduced HB 2332, a companion to SB 6091, to regulate automated license plate readers, with hearings upcoming. The 60-day session addresses broader issues like budgets and housing, as covered in local reporting on the kickoff agenda.
