Vancouver Father David Redmond Sentenced to 16 Years for Killing Infant Son

April 15, 2016 — Vancouver, Wash. David Redmond was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree domestic violence murder in the death of his 6-week-old son, Everett, whom he threw across a room in frustration in October 2014.

Redmond, then 25, originally faced a first-degree murder charge but reached a plea deal with prosecutors. Clark County Superior Court Judge Scott A. Hull sentenced him to 195 months, within the standard range for the offense, as reported by The Columbian.

According to court documents and investigators, Redmond initially claimed he had rolled over onto the infant while sleeping, but medical experts determined the injuries—severe blunt force trauma—were inconsistent with that account.

Redmond later admitted to throwing the crying baby onto a changing table across the room. The plea deal spared him a possible life sentence.

During the sentencing hearing, Redmond apologized in court.

“I greatly apologize to my ex-wife and to the friends and family affected by this… No amount of words or actions can justify that or bring back my son. Every day I regret it. I should have known better and I should have just walked away when I was feeling frustrated, but I didn’t and that’s a mistake I’m going to live with for the rest of my life.”

Everett’s great-grandfather, Mike Faris, addressed the court, criticizing Redmond’s choices despite available family and church support.

“He’s got a head on his shoulders… All parents have problems with their kids. There are so many people that would have taken that load off his shoulders. He had an extended family. He belonged to a very helpful church. Anybody would have helped him.”

The case drew attention for the brutality of the act against a defenseless infant. Redmond will serve his sentence in a state facility.
