Dec. 4, 2025 — Redmond, WA — A quick-thinking resident contained a fire in her apartment unit within a six-story multifamily building early Thursday morning, thanks to her prompt use of a fire extinguisher, according to the Redmond Fire Department.
The incident began when the resident was awakened by a loud popping sound from a malfunctioning baseboard heater.
She immediately woke her husband and infant, evacuated them safely, then re-entered the unit with an extinguisher to put out the flames. She also shut off the circuit breaker and closed the door to contain the smoke and prevent hallway alarm activation.
Engine 111 responded to the scene. No injuries were reported, and the resident’s actions averted hundreds of thousands of dollars in potential fire, smoke, and water damage, as well as disruptions to other residents and businesses below.
Thanks to her quick actions, she immediately woke her husband and infant, ensuring they safely exited the apartment. Her calm, decisive response protected her family and prevented what could have been hundreds of thousands of dollars in fire, smoke, and water damage, as well as major disruptions to other residents and businesses below.
The Redmond Fire Department praised the resident’s preparedness and urged the public to ensure smoke alarms are working, know how to use extinguishers, and act quickly in emergencies.
The fire occurred in Redmond’s Overlake area, near locations such as 152nd Avenue NE, where multifamily buildings are common. A separate recent fire alarm incident was reported at a six-story apartment near Redmond Way and 152nd Avenue Northeast, highlighting ongoing fire safety concerns in the neighborhood.
