Jan 23, 2025, Redmond — Overlake School’s basketball programs wrapped a busy week with strong results and clear signs of progress, the school’s athletics staff reported.
Upper school teams went 10-1 across their slate of games, the girls remain unbeaten in the Coho Division of the Emerald Sound Conference, and the boys kept pace with a string of wins that has them positioned for a tough finish to the season.
The girls’ program posted the week’s headline result, beating Chinook for the first time in three years.
The victory reflected balanced scoring, 13 different players found the scoreboard in that game, and steady development across the roster, according to Overlake’s athletics updates and staff.
The Owls’ excellent record in the Coho Division now sets up a key stretch against conference opponents, including a highlighted matchup with Granite Falls later this week.
The boys also enjoyed a productive week, recording three wins and moving to six victories in their last seven games.
Overlake’s report noted the team showed resilience in recent play, overcoming a 14-0 run by Eastside Prep during one contest and answering with disciplined offense and defensive stops.
The team sits 10th in the regional RPI rankings and faces a demanding finish. Six of its final seven games are on the road, and an upcoming matchup with Prep looms as a measuring point for both squads.
Staff and coaches credited the teams’ success to unselfish play and attention to fundamentals.
Overlake’s coverage highlighted that the girls’ balanced scoring has helped the team manage games effectively, while the boys have limited poor shooting opportunities by prioritizing “the best shot for the team,” a pattern reflected in their recent scoring output, which has averaged near 75 points per game.
The school also noted off-court accomplishments. Overlake’s Hoops for Hope fundraiser raised more than $40,000 for DIPG pediatric brain cancer research at Seattle Children’s, a result organizers described as a community effort that extended beyond the campus gym.
Athletic Director Jonn Wiley and Middle School Head Mike Davidson were credited on the athletics page for hosting the weekly recap and for spotlighting program milestones.
Individual recognition went to Anoushka Singh, who was named athlete of the week for her defensive intensity and consistent play for the girls’ squad.
The week’s media recap also included a mailbag segment that looked back on notable alumni contributions; former center Owen Friend was singled out in discussion as a standout player some would add to today’s roster.
Boys’ head coach Taylor Banks joined the week’s recap to outline how the program maintains energy through a dense January schedule.
The coverage emphasized practical steps such as keeping practices varied, encouraging player-led activities, and reinforcing team rituals that build cohesion.
Staff noted that team captains have taken an active role in leadership on and off the court.
Overlake Athletics posted the recap on its media page and said the wins and developments reflect both coaching emphasis and growing depth across rosters.
The school asked supporters to check the athletics page for upcoming game times and any schedule changes.
This report is based on Overlake Athletics’ media coverage and statements from school athletic staff and coaches.
