Secret Service, Sheriff’s Deputy Fatally Shoot Armed North Carolina Man at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago

Feb. 22, 2026 — Palm Beach, Florida — U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin from North Carolina after he breached the secure perimeter at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort around 1:30 a.m. ET early Sunday morning.

Martin was armed with a shotgun and a gas can. Authorities reported that he dropped the gas can but raised the shotgun into a firing position, prompting officers to open fire, according to BBC News and The Guardian.

No injuries were reported among security personnel. President Trump was not at the property and was in Washington, D.C. at the time, AP News and Reuters reported.

The New York Times detailed the fatal shooting of the man attempting unauthorized entry at the resort. NBC News also covered law enforcement’s response to the breach.
