Historic Northeast Blizzard Brings Record Snow, Widespread Disruptions and Power Outages

February 24, 2026 — Northeast United States

A historic bomb cyclone, unofficially named Winter Storm Hernando, struck the Northeast from February 22-24, dumping up to 37.9 inches of snow in parts of New England including Providence, Rhode Island, triggering widespread blizzard conditions, wind gusts over 70 mph, power outages for nearly 1 million, more than 10,000 flight cancellations, travel bans in New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island, school closures across the region, and advisories for millions to stay indoors.

As of February 24, cleanup efforts are underway amid lingering impacts, according to the New York Times.

The storm, described by the Associated Press as a huge snowstorm, forced millions to remain home while disrupting flights and closing schools. The Washington Post reported three-foot snow totals and regional fallout, while the New York Times provided live updates on record snowfall in New England.

CBS News detailed power outages affecting nearly 1 million, over 10,000 flight cancellations and multi-state travel bans. CNN noted travel bans easing after the storm, with up to three feet of snow and 10,000 flights canceled. NPR reported the blizzard halted travel from Delaware to New England with record snows.
