Jan. 7, 2026 — Redmond, Ore. Ian Haupt announced his appointment as the new editor of the Redmond Spokesman, succeeding Tim Trainor, in a first-person article published on the newspaper’s website.
Haupt, who has contributed to the paper as a reporter and photographer, detailed the transition in his piece titled “Haupt: New to the Spokesman, more to come.”
Published at 9:23 a.m., the article describes Trainor moving to the editor role at The Bulletin, the Spokesman‘s “big brother” publication under the Carpenter Media Group, while continuing to live in Redmond and assisting with the handover.
“Hello. My name is Ian Haupt. I’m taking over for Tim Trainor as editor of the Redmond Spokesman,” Haupt wrote. “Tim hasn’t gone far. He still lives in Redmond and is commuting down to what is this newspaper’s big brother, The Bulletin, where he is the new editor. He has helped me graciously through this transition.”
Haupt described the past month as a “whirlwind,” noting he is training his successor at The Bulletin while settling into the Spokesman role, which he called a “one-man shop” requiring duties beyond writing stories.
His recent bylines for the paper include coverage of nine new businesses opening in downtown Redmond in 2025 and a $10,000 donation to Oasis Village ahead of its second anniversary, both published January 6.
His Muck Rack profile lists him as based in Bend and Redmond, covering arts and entertainment, outdoors, business, and news for the Spokesman and The Bulletin, where he joined toward the end of 2023.
Haupt shared his background: born in Seattle, raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; pursued professional cycling until age 19; studied in Bellingham, Washington; and worked as a reporter and editor of Mount Baker Experience magazine in Blaine, Washington, before moving to Central Oregon.
“As for a vision, I don’t have one of those yet, other than the most basic of journalistic practices — get you the most important stories as quickly as possible,” he wrote. “I look forward to sitting down and getting to know as many people as possible.”
He provided contact information: ian.haupt@redmondspokesman.com or 541-548-2184, inviting story ideas or feedback.
Trainor had introduced himself as editor in a similar article on March 9, 2022, after roles at the East Oregonian, University of Oregon master’s program, and Herald and News in Klamath Falls. No secondary coverage of the leadership change has appeared in major regional outlets as of January 8.
