Dec. 9, 2025 — Redmond, Wash. — The King County Council confirmed Mayor Angela Birney’s four-year reappointment to the Sound Transit Board of Directors, following her nomination by King County Executive Girmay Zahilay and initial appointment in 2024.
The confirmation, documented in File #2025-0376, underscores Birney’s contributions to regional transit development, including four light rail stations now open in Redmond and the Crosslake Connection expected next year.

The City of Redmond announced the decision on Dec. 10, emphasizing the importance of East King County’s role in the regional system.
“Thank you to Executive Zahilay for the opportunity to continue serving on the Sound Transit Board,” said Mayor Birney. “I am honored to be in the position and represent the needs and priorities in East King County. I remain committed to increasing connectivity and access to transit across the entire Puget Sound region.”
The City of Redmond newsflash detailed Birney’s ongoing advocacy for sustainable and equitable transit growth.
The City of Redmond Facebook post highlighted Zahilay’s nomination as a vote of confidence in Birney’s transit leadership.
Birney’s reappointment accompanies changes to King County’s Sound Transit Board delegation for 2026.
NPI’s Cascadia Advocate reported four new members—Teresa Mosqueda and Steffanie Fain of the King County Council, Seattle Mayor-Elect Katie Wilson, and Tukwila Mayor Thomas McLeod—joining alongside renominated members Birney and King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer. Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus was not renominated.
The Urbanist confirmed the new appointees, noting the board’s upcoming decisions on expansions amid financial challenges.
