Feb. 2, 2025 — Redmond, WA — City public works crews initiated snow and ice response operations Saturday night by pre-treating priority 1, 2, and 3 routes in anticipation of slippery conditions, according to an official announcement from the City of Redmond.
Redmond snow and ice response began Saturday night with pre-treating all priority 1, 2, and 3 routes, and it will continue as long as needed.
The city’s snow and ice response plan employs a preemptive strategy, applying liquid calcium de-icer overnight to arterial roadways to prevent frost buildup before morning commutes.
Four large snowplows prioritize clearing one lane in each direction on major routes first, followed by full road clearance. Crews use mixtures of calcium chloride, road salt, and sand depending on conditions. Neighborhood streets receive plowing only if severe weather warrants it, after priority routes are addressed.

Priority routes provide access to emergency facilities, schools, and key entry and exit points from the city.
Residents are advised to review the priority plow route map, avoid unnecessary travel, allow extra commute time, and carry warm clothing and emergency supplies if driving.
Officials emphasize leaving space for plows and clearing sidewalks and driveway snow piles to aid operations.
The plan includes specialized equipment such as liquid anti-icing applicator trucks, material spreaders, and a salt shed. For weather alerts, visit Redmond’s weather updates page.
In February 2019, former Mayor John Marchione declared a state of emergency during a major snow event, highlighting the city’s preparedness for extreme winter weather.
