Redmond City Council Enacts Ban on Tobacco and Vaping in City Parks

Jan. 2, 2018 — Redmond, WA The Redmond City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting smoking, vaping, and use of tobacco products in all city parks and trails during its meeting Tuesday night, updating park rules to enhance public health and safety.

The new rules, part of Ordinance 2912, took effect shortly after passage and ban lighting or smoking cigarettes, vapor, electric cigarettes, cigars, pipes—including hookah—or using chewing tobacco or other substances in park areas. The measure was among several park regulation updates approved at the first council meeting of the year.

A. No person shall light and/or smoke cigarettes, vapor electric cigarettes, cigars, pipes of any kind, including but not limited to hookah pipes, or otherwise use any tobacco products, including but not limited to chewing tobacco, or smoking of legal and illegal controlled substances in any City of Redmond park area. The prohibition extends to all city parks and trails, aligning with broader efforts to create smoke-free public spaces. City officials noted the change promotes a healthier environment for families and visitors, as reported in local coverage ahead of implementation on March 31, 2018.

Before the ordinance, smoking restrictions were less comprehensive. A 2017 city council study session discussed expanding bans on all types of smoking and tobacco use in parks and trails, laying groundwork for the 2018 action.

The updated park rules also address other infractions like littering and alcohol use, reinforcing Redmond’s commitment to maintaining clean and safe recreational areas.
