Redmond City Council Position 1 Vacancy: Applications Closed, Interviews Scheduled for January

Jan. 8, 2026 — Redmond, Wash. The City Council has closed applications for the vacant Position #1 seat and will conduct initial interviews on January 13 at 7 p.m., following Councilmember Osman Salahuddin’s resignation in early November 2025 to focus on his role in the Washington State House of Representatives.

The recruitment process, announced November 19, 2025, drew applications through noon Pacific Time on January 2, 2026, via the city’s GovernmentJobs portal.

Eligible candidates are Redmond residents in the 98052 ZIP code for at least 365 days, aged 18 or older, and registered U.S. voters. The position pays $2,300 monthly, plus medical, dental, vision, retirement, and other benefits.

Responsibilities include attending weekly Tuesday meetings from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m., policy oversight, budget approval, contract approvals, and community representation. The job posting, now closed as confirmed on the careers page, outlines supplemental questions on community service, skills, and views on local government.

Final interviews and a vote among top candidates are set for January 20, with swearing-in possible that evening or by January 31 if a majority approves; Mayor Angela Birney breaks ties. The term expires December 31, 2027. The city issued reminders via Facebook, including a “City News Now” video in early January, and LinkedIn.
