January 28, 2026 – Redmond, WA. As winter weather continues to grip the region, the Redmond Fire Department is reminding residents to stay alert to the dangers posed by downed power lines, which become more common during periods of strong winds, freezing rain, and icy conditions.
According to fire officials, winter storms frequently cause trees and branches to snap, often pulling power lines down with them.
These hazards can be difficult to spot, especially in low visibility or after dark, but they pose a serious risk to anyone who comes too close.
Fire officials stress that all downed power lines should be assumed to be live and extremely dangerous, regardless of their appearance.
Residents who encounter a downed power line are urged to keep a safe distance and immediately report the situation by calling 911 or Puget Sound Energy (PSE) at 1-888-225-5773.
Even lines that appear inactive can still be energized, and approaching them could result in severe injury or worse.
The Redmond Fire Department also provided important guidance for drivers. If a power line falls onto a vehicle someone is driving, officials say the safest action is to remain inside the vehicle and call 911.
Touching the ground or any metal part of the vehicle while exiting could complete an electrical circuit, creating a life-threatening situation.
Fire officials explained that not all lines on a utility pole serve the same purpose, but all should be treated with caution.
Primary power lines, found just below the transformer, also carry electricity and remain dangerous if damaged or downed.
Cable or communication lines, when present, are usually installed lower on the pole and do not carry an electrocution risk.
However, from ground level, it can be difficult to distinguish between these lines, reinforcing the importance of staying well clear of any fallen wires.
The Redmond Fire Department encourages residents to share this information with family members, especially children and elderly relatives, who may be less familiar with the dangers of downed power lines.
