Redmond Homeowner Loses $298,000 to Door-to-Door Roofing Scam, Police Warn of Similar Cases

Dec. 30, 2025 — In Redmond’s Education Hill neighborhood, a homeowner lost $298,000 to two adult white males with Irish accents who solicited door-to-door roofing services and performed substandard work without permits or inspections, the Redmond Police Department reported.

The suspects claimed to represent a legitimate local roofing business. After gaining agreement for initial work at a reasonable price, they alleged discovering additional serious issues requiring immediate repairs, pressuring the victim into paying the large sum for what detectives believe were unnecessary or fraudulent services.

Redmond police detectives urged residents to exercise caution with unsolicited door-to-door offers for roofing, construction, or masonry work. Key recommendations include:

  • Obtain at least three estimates from different companies.
  • Ensuring contractors secure proper permits.
  • Requiring written contracts before work begins.
  • Verifying credentials via the Better Business Bureau and Washington State Department of Labor & Industries for a valid Unified Business Identifier (UBI).
  • Limiting upfront payments to one-third of the total and withholding the final payment until after inspection.
  • Call 911 if anyone attempts unauthorized roof access or threatens property damage.

Call 911 or the non-emergency line at 425-556-2500 if you have information, video or suspect you were a victim.

KIRO 7 News reported on Jan. 12, 2026, highlighting parallels to a 2024 scam in Shoreline where Irish nationals Patrick McDonagh and Matthew McDonagh allegedly defrauded an elderly homeowner of $435,000 for fictitious roof and foundation repairs, leading to federal charges.

Earlier coverage by KIRO 7 and MyNorthwest.com on Jan. 9, 2026, echoed police warnings about verifying contractors and avoiding pressure tactics. The story was also republished by Yahoo News.
