Redmond Hosts Free “Lights Out for Birds” Documentary & Panel Discussion

February 6, 2026 – Redmond, Washington. The City of Redmond’s Parks & Recreation Department is inviting community members to attend a free public screening of Lights Out Texas, an award-winning documentary produced by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

The documentary will explore how light pollution and building design affect migrating birds and what communities can do to help protect them.

Through scientific research and real-world examples, Lights Out Texas illustrates how artificial lighting and modern architectural features can disrupt these ancient celestial pathways, putting millions of birds at risk each year.

The film also highlights collaborative conservation efforts involving researchers, educators, and city leaders, and advocates working together to reduce bird fatalities and safeguard nighttime environments.

Redmond residents will have two opportunities to view the documentary at the Redmond Senior & Community Center.

The first screening takes place on Thursday, February 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a second showing on Saturday, February 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Both events are free and open to all ages, though advance registration is required due to limited seating.

Following each screening, attendees are encouraged to stay for a panel discussion and guided community conversation.

The discussion will focus on lessons from the film and practical steps individuals, neighborhoods, and cities can take to reduce light pollution and create safer environments for birds and other wildlife.

Topics are expected to include responsible outdoor lighting, bird-friendly building practices, and how small changes can make a meaningful impact during migration seasons.

The event is part of Redmond Parks & Recreation’s Winter 2026 Outdoor Education programming and aligns with broader “Light Out for Bird” initiatives promoted across North America.

BY bringing the documentary to Redmond, the City hopes to raise awareness about an issue that often goes unnoticed while empowering residents to take action locally.

Registration for Lights Out for Birds: A Documentary Screening and Panel Conversation is currently open through the City of Redmond’s Parks & Recreation activity portal.

As of early February, hundreds of sports remain available for both dates, but the organizers recommend registering early to secure a seat.

The screenings will be held at the Redmond Senior & Community Center, which regularly hosts educational programs, cultural events, and community gatherings.

Community members interested in nature, wildlife, environmental science, or local action initiatives are encouraged to attend.

For more information and to register, residents can visit the City of Redmond Parks & Recreation website and search for “Lights Out for Birds.”
