Dec. 27, 2025 — Redmond, Wash. — Redmond Police Department officers bought a jacket and snow pants for a homeless man they detained outside a Target store after he allegedly shoplifted the items to stay warm in freezing temperatures.
The man also had an active theft warrant and a painful hand infection from stolen antibiotics. He told police that he took the clothes from Target because he is homeless and trying to stay warm in the cold weather.
Redmond officers made sure he received medical care for his hand before buying him the jacket and snow pants through the BlueBridge Alliance, a local nonprofit that helps law enforcement support community needs.
In the video, an officer can be heard explaining that they wanted to make sure the man stayed safe from the freezing temperatures.
Police said that even though theft is still a crime, the case will go to court.
“While officers made it clear that theft is still illegal and the case will proceed in court, this moment highlights an important balance of holding people accountable and recognizing their immediate human needs”- RPD said.
