June 14, 2018 — Kirkland, Wash. Redmond Police Department detectives fatally shot a suspect fueling a truck at the Kingsgate Safeway gas station on 144th Street NE and 124th Avenue NE while attempting to arrest him on felony warrants related to King County crimes.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. The suspect, identified as Marcelo Castellano, a 39-year-old Washington resident and convicted felon, was non-compliant and armed with a handgun found on his person, according to reports. He was the subject of an RPD investigation.
RPD officers and medics performed CPR at the scene, but Castellano died there. No other injuries or additional suspects were reported, per the department’s civic alert and initial coverage from the Redmond Reporter.

Kirkland Police Department led the investigation, assisted by the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab. Five RPD detectives, ranging in age from 35 to 47 with 11 to 22 years of experience, were placed on administrative leave, as reported by KOMO News and the Seattle Times.
Castellano had been wanted for felony crimes, per KING5 coverage. FOX13 Seattle confirmed his identity and noted he was considered armed and dangerous.
In 2023, an inquest panel determined that one detective’s actions in the shooting were not justified and possibly criminal, not in good faith.
