Redmond Shares $2.06M Federal Safe Streets Grant with Des Moines, North Bend for Road Safety Projects

Jan. 6, 2026 — Redmond, Wash. Redmond is sharing a $2.06 million federal Safe Streets grant with Des Moines and North Bend to fund speed-reduction pilots, safer crossings, and enhanced crash data collection.

The award is part of $6.58 million allocated to four Western Washington counties, according to a Patch.com newsletter published that day.

The funding comes amid declining serious crashes in 2025, as state leaders pursue the “Target Zero” goal of eliminating roadway deaths and severe injuries. The Patch AM newsletter, which highlighted how the dollars could change driving and walking in Redmond, positioned the grant as a lead local story.

This shared grant builds on Redmond’s ongoing Safer Streets Action Plan, part of broader Vision Zero efforts documented on the city’s public engagement site. It is distinct from an earlier approximately $300,000 award.

The award aligns with a wave of recent Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grants in Washington. For context, Des Moines separately received a $1.56 million federal grant announced Dec. 20, 2025, to reduce traffic deaths.

King and Snohomish County communities were awarded $5 million on Dec. 27 for traffic signals, speed studies, and bike planning. Four Western Washington counties received a total of about $6.6 million, announced Dec. 30.

The U.S. DOT FY2025 SS4A award list, released Dec. 23, details grants nationwide under the $5 billion program spanning 2022-2026, though Redmond’s specific $2.06 million shared award was first detailed locally in the Patch report. No further official city announcements appear on Redmond.gov newsflash as of Jan. 7.
