Team USA Wins First Men’s Hockey Gold in 46 Years, Defeating Canada 2-1 in OT at 2026 Milan Olympics

Feb. 22, 2026 — Milan, Italy Team USA captured the men’s ice hockey gold medal with a 2-1 overtime victory over Canada at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena during the 2026 Winter Olympics, securing their first title in the event since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” exactly 46 years prior.

Matt Boldy opened scoring for the U.S. six minutes into the first period, assisted by Quinn Hughes and Auston Matthews, slipping the puck past Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington. Cale Makar tied it late in the second at 38:16 with an assist from Devon Toews. Jack Hughes delivered the game-winner 1:41 into 3-on-3 overtime, converting a feed from Zach Werenski after a sequence initiated by goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.[1]

Hellebuyck anchored the victory, stopping 41 of 42 shots and earning gold medal game MVP honors. His highlights included a second-period paddle save on Devon Toews, denying breakaways by Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini, and thwarting Nathan MacKinnon point-blank. “He was our best player tonight by a mile,” Jack Hughes said.

The win carried deep emotion as Team USA honored late forward Johnny Gaudreau, who died in August 2024 alongside his brother Matthew. Players skated Gaudreau’s No. 13 jersey around the ice during celebrations, carried by Auston Matthews, Matthew Tkachuk, and Zach Werenski, and brought his young children, including son John Jr., onto the arena for photos and the medal ceremony.[2]

“This is something John would have been at… we talked about playing for him, making him proud and I think we did that,” Werenski said.

“Johnny Gaudreau especially… To get it done today, it’s just an unbelievable feeling,” Dylan Larkin added.

Canada coach Jon Cooper praised his team’s effort despite the loss, without captain Sidney Crosby due to injury: “The real winner of this tournament was ice hockey.”

The fully NHL-stacked rosters delivered a thriller, with Canada outshooting the U.S. heavily in the final periods but unable to break through. Team USA went 6-0 in the tournament, outscoring opponents 26-9. Quinn Hughes was named tournament best defender.

The victory sparked massive buzz on X, including ESPN’s post calling it “a game 46 years in the making” and the New York Post hailing Hellebuyck.
